[UPDATE] New Affiliate: WELCOME KPOP LISTS + The Official Celebrity Accounts Page Has Been REVAMPED + New Photos on Boyfriend Profile + WE NEED YOUR HELP STARLIGHTS & MELODIES

HERRO! (Imagine me saying that in Amber’s voice)

First thing’s first. We would like to introduce to you Mandu-ers a new affiliate of ours: welcome one and all, Kpop Lists!!! Yay! Check them out on their website to discover an extensive amount of information neatly compacted into these things called “lists” (I’ve never heard of them before, but they sure do seem to be quite beneficial) to help you discover everything you’ll ever need to know about the K-pop fandom. Oh! And while you’re at it, follow them on Twitter too. They’ll keep ya updated as they go.

Affiliates Page: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/about/affiliates/

And as for our second bit of information for y’all…we spent a tad bit of time (and by a tad, I mean A LOT) revamping our Official Celebrity Accounts page. We put in the Instagram accounts for a lot of groups, seeing as that at the time the page was first published, Instagram wasn’t as big as it is now, and in the time between then and now a lot of idols have created IG profiles. SOOOO, we went ahead and inserted those all in. Likewise, someone tipped us off on me2day recently shutting down (this was something we weren’t aware of). So once we found out, we went ahead and deleted all of the me2day accounts on the accounts page as well. All in all, we put in some things…got rid of some things…blah blah blah. Check it out!

Official Celebrity Accounts:

What we added (if only some members of a group are mentioned, it’s probably because we already have the others’ accounts listed on the page):

Boyfriend Profile: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/kpop-profiles/boy-groups/boyfriend-profile/

Well, that’s that! We’ll continue to work on updating Block B and ChoColat’s profile for now.

OH BTW. If you guys would be so kind to help out (especially all of you Starlights and Melodies out there), we want to add more trivia/fun facts to our VIXX and BTOB profiles. Someone posted on Twitter that Got7’s profile was pretty extensive (hehe she noticed that I was a fan I’m guilty I admit) in comparison to VIXX’s and BTOB’s, so I want to change that. If you guys know any bit of helpful/informative fun facts on these two groups, then shoot us an e-mail at sumandu.wordpress@gmail.com. Now of course, we won’t just go ahead and take your word for it at first glance. We’ll make sure to back up any and all information you send us with research, so that we don’t post anything that isn’t true. We’ll give credit to you as well.

Okay! That’s it for today. Sadly, YG trolled us on WINNER’s debut (we should’ve saw that coming), so we’re going to cry. Jk. Until next time; and don’t forget to share the K-pop love ❤

[UPDATE] VOTING IS ALMOST OVER (Defunct) + New Profile! + Updated “Official Celebrity Accounts” Page

We have ONE DAY LEFT (Defunct) before the polls close. Vote now to help choose the priority in which these profiles should be made next!

ALSO…I am proud to announce that I have made a new profile for 15&, a young girl duo from JYP Entertainment. They are sooooo incredibly talented and beyond their years. Honestly, I’m very amazed at how gifted these two ladies are, especially at so early a time in their lives. I discovered them through Got7 and fell in complete love with them like that. So much so that I just ran on over here to SuMandu and just had to make them a profile. My only regret is that I hadn’t taken the time before to find out about them earlier. But no worries. I know about them now, and the moment I watched their MVs and saw their appearances on After School Club and Weekly Idol, I was instantly hooked.

What I love about these girls are their – for lack of a better word – “unconventionality”. They are truly different from what I’ve been seeing amongst K-pop girl groups lately (and even a select few soloists). I especially have high hopes for Jimin! I firmly believe she is a catalyst towards changing the “ideal” of what a female K-pop idol should be. She is proud, fierce, and hilarious; and fills any room she walks into with her positive vibe and energy. And omg yes their voices. They are crisper, cleaner, and fresher than a blue sky on a warm, breezy day in the middle of Summer. Their vocal ranges are craaaazy good, and their musicality is so on point. I AM JUST SO HIGHLY ANTICIPATING HOW 15& WILL TURN OUT.

Gosh JYP. Stop wrecking up my bias list, forreal. I am a solid believer of the YG Family, but my faith in JYP Nation is growing too fast, too soon. But will I try to stop it? LOL NO. KEEP IT COMING.

BTW for the record…I ship Yerin & Yugyeom very, very hard…but

CAN JACKSON & JIMIN JUST PLEASE….LIKE…RIGHT NOW…JUST…OMG YES…JACKMIN 4 LYFE. TO INFINITY AND BEYOND…’TIL DEATH DO US PART.

Ok. I’m done.

Also, you can find their Instagram and Twitter accounts on here, as well as their other official sites…

And if you’re interested in getting to know them better (that is…if you don’t already know them), then come check these videos out! I promise you, you’ll find yourself falling in love with them too (;

So, that’s all for today! I’m signing off for the night. Goodnight all Mandu-ers out there, and don’t forget to always share the K-pop love ❤

[UPDATE] Updated AOA Profile + New Profiles + Official Accounts + New Page!!

Today’s update is as follows:

1) I was going through Twitter and came across somebody tweeting a link of our AOA profile to a friend of theirs (probably because they’re new to the fandom and wanted to get to know each member’s name), but they also said that the profile was old and that they would send them another link to a new, updated, and more accurate profile. I was, like, WTF MAN I NEED TO GO FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY. I guess my inner competitive side was starting to break the mold, because instantly I felt like SuMandu wasn’t living up to my expectations of being a top-notch provider on all things K-pop. And so, after reading that I opened up our AOA page and got to work right away. Then ta-da! Here we are now with a newly updated AOA profile. I made sure to include juicy trivia facts (because that’s how I like to roll, y’know), added their blood types, and I changed all of their old photos to more recent snaps of them. Here on SuMandu, I like to keep things fresh, ya feel me?

Now, one thing I want to mention about AOA that explains why I like them so much is because they’re not just a group, but a  band, too. Like, a legit, straight-up, hands down, full on band. But there’s also more to it. Here’s the scoop:

Originally, it used to be that AOA’s band and idol group had practiced separately from each other. There were two teams, called the White Team and the Black Team, and the White Team would have practices early in the morning and the Black Team would likewise do so in the afternoon. However, now, there are no White and Black Teams, and instead both the band and the idol group have practice simultaneously. In other words, the band practices with their instruments while the idol group has dance practice. The reason why I like this is because it fosters a better, more interactive relationship amongst the members. By keeping the practice within the same time slot, they have more time to practice as both a “band + dance” group. This way of tackling the matter works symbiotically – it benefits both sides of the spectrum. It’s so much more efficient as it if effective. And the fact that the company enables them to work this way is just overall creating a healthier environment for the members to work in together as a functioning unit, not as divided entities.

Anyways…I’m getting off topic. AOA has a lot of jutzpah to their name, and they’re definitely living up to it. As I mentioned in my previous post where I talked about K-pop’s transformation in the past five years and how it’s making a major comeback this year, I touched down on the fact that rookie groups of late are definitely the “in” thing, and AOA is living proof of it. If you guys don’t already know it, I’ve always been more into girl groups when I first fell into the K-pop fandom (After School, 2NE1, Sistar are my absolute all time favorites, even though it was a boy group who got me into K-pop in the first place), but recently I have been falling for boy groups just as much (2PM, U-Kiss, Got7, Infinite). However, AOA is slowly and steadily creeping up onto my bias list and wrecking things up. They have got some seriously nice bodies too. Nice enough to compete with Secret, Sistar, and After School.

So, if you guys want to find out more about this girl group that is more than what they seem, click on over to their profile!

AOA (Ace of Angels) Profile: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/kpop-profiles/girl-groups/aoa-ace-of-angels-profile/

2) As promised, I have two new profiles for you guys. And also as promised, they are Eric Nam’s profile and Akdong Musician’s profile. These profiles were actually quite fun to make! I’ll admit that. Eric Nam in general is such a spunky, funky, cool and fresh dude that his profile is a joy to read. Automatically you’ll start to feel like you’ve been best friends forever. I’m actually very glad that Eric Nam decided to enter this business, because he brings such a refreshing vibe to K-pop that I think he might be one of the very few but important artists who can act as catalysts and slowly push the concept of what K-pop is towards something much more real and substantial. Yet AKMU on the other hand — although there isn’t a lot of information about them that is available yet — is quite the original and bright duo that their profile one-hundred per cent felt like I was sincerely trying to get to know them better on the scale of an endearing fan’s perspective. So if I felt that way, maybe you will too?

Eric Nam Profile: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/kpop-profiles/solo-artists/eric-nam-profile/

Akdong Musician (AKMU) Profile: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/kpop-profiles/duopair/dynamic-duo-profile-2/

OMG yeah and AKMU’s new song “I Love You” is totally giving me the feels, man. Totes. Can someone tell me who that guy (Soohyun’s love interest) in the MV is? BECAUSE HE IS ABSOLUTELY ADORBS.

3) Of course, as I’ve been doing so in the past, I continue to do so now the tradition of making a new profile and simultaneously adding the official accounts paired with the members of said profiles to the Official Celebrity Accounts page. SO CHECK THOSE OUT ALL OF YOU HARDCORE DIE HARD FANS OUT THERE.

Official Celebrity Accounts: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/more-k-pop-information/official-celebrity-accounts/

3) As you may or may not know (you probably don’t, though), I’m working on an entirely new section of this blog called “The Hallyu Wave”, featuring more personal pieces such as reviews, critiques, showdowns, blah blah blah. Well, I’ve added on another page under “The Hallyu Wave” called “Korean Games“, where we’ll give you the full-on breakdown and 101 on some of the most popular and common Korean hand games, drinking games, and board games (????) alike! So if you want a better break down, just click on the following link, and be prepared for when we start posting more pages!

Korean Games: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/the-hallyu-wave/games-quizzes-2/

4) Quickly, I must mention that it has only been about a week or so since I’ve been back, and I’m still making adjustments to this site as a whole. As a part of that, I’ll have to tell you guys now that if you’re looking for some Twitter accounts of duos or solo artists (keep in mind, the profiles of duos and solo artists who have been published before 2013), then you should be able to find them on their individual profiles and not on the Official Celebrity Accounts page…or at least, just for right now. In time, I’ll make the adjustment to have ALL official accounts (including Twitter) listed under our Official Celebrity Accounts page, but for now, things aren’t as organized as I want them to be.

~~

And that’s, that! I’m going to continue working on the site, since I’m not completely finished with some things here. I’ll post again later! Make sure to check our Twitter, too, if you want to keep more up-to-date. I’m off to work on some new pages under The Hallyu Wave section, and then update our Block B. profile (I’ve got some major trivia facts for you guys…just you wait!)

Toodle-loo fellow Mandu-ers!

– Jomarie

Five Years of K-pop in Review

First off, let me just say right now that this post has nothing to do with an update or a new profile being made. Actually, it has nothing to do with the site in general. This is just a post solely based on personal thoughts and reflections, and some conclusions that I’ve come to about K-pop and its transformation in the past few years.

Okay, so to get started, here’s a couple of things that have been on my mind recently — in regards to K-pop, of course — that I feel needs to be shared with all of you Mandu-ers out there that even so much as care in the slightest way about my two cents. In a nutshell, I’m gonna talk about…

  1. The concept of  “idols” vs. “celebrities”
  2. Dating amongst stars nowadays
  3. The “rookie group”
  4. The growth of the veteran idol

Now, these topics might seem confusing — and it’s probably because I worded them quite awkwardly — but in all actuality they make sense, I promise you. Just bare with me.

TOPIC #1

What I mean by saying “the concept of ‘idols’ vs. ‘celebrities'” is how I find the roles and responsibilities of a Korean (for the lack of a better word) “star” to be entirely and wholeheartedly different from our usual idea of what a celebrity is. I daresay this because if we all just take a second to pause and sincerely ponder the notion of the word “K-pop”, in and of itself we would all come to this common understanding that, truthfully, being a celebrity in Korea is not the same as being a celebrity in another country. Of course, there are celebrity athletes, celebrity models, celebrity fashion designers and what not that continue to exist within Korea’s celebrity bubble, but what I’m focusing on here is the celebrity idol – AKA somebody or someone who appeals to a mass audience consisting of young teens through a combination of stylistic musicality, good looks, and overall marketability.

In America (and maybe elsewhere, though I’m not too sure of this so don’t quote me on it), the “celebrity” seems to have less restrictions placed on their style of living. In other words, here you can find stars living their lives however they like, for as long as they like, and not give two flipping ducks about who is watching them. Yet, to me, I find that in South Korea the “celebrity” takes on a whole new concept, therefore rightfully labeling them as “idols”. You see, when you are thrown into the spotlight after years of rigorous training, you automatically carry this invisible weight on your shoulders that you feel a need to consistently manage, and you can’t help it because you’ve just been intensely refined of epic proportions to serve our needs of entertaining us.

We call Korean pop stars “idols” for a reason. We basically place them on a pedestal to be watched and honored. But that’s exactly it. They know we’re watching them. They know we’re judging them. They know that we expect much of them, and news flash, they care that we do so.

In the end, I guess I just wanted to write about this real quick to serve as a reminder for all of us K-poppers out there. A reminder that at the end of the day, we shouldn’t forget about all the roles and the responsibilities that the idols we love so deeply have to maintain second after second. The truth is, the “idol” exists contrary to its name; they seemingly hold the power in their right hand, but the fans and the followers are the ones who really hold dominion over this pop culture industry.

The question now is, where does the line of equilibrium get drawn?

TOPIC #2

Here’s some food for thought: is it just me or are a bunch, a buuuunch, of K-pop stars seemingly dating a lot nowadays? Maybe it’s just me because I haven’t been quite in-the-know (and definitely not up-to-date) with all the latest news and yada yada yada…but for real, it’s getting to the point where the new, fresh, and cool K-pop stars of today are actually of yesterdayAnd this sort of ties in with topics #3 and #4, but I’ll touch down on those in a bit. As for right now, I just think that I’m stuck in a world – as maybe the rest of you are – where the once young 20-somethings of Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, SS501, SHINee, and all the rest of them that debuted back in the 2005 to 2009 era are still those same young 20-somethings…BUT I’M SO WRONG. I’m forgetting that, hello, this is 2o-freaking-14. That transition from rookie K-pop star to a legitimate veteran is being made as we speak. They’re dating. They’re engaged. They’re getting married. They’re having kids. This “they’re” that we’re talking about are the stars we grew up with, and it’s time to acknowledge the fact that a new Hallyu wave is making its way to shore.

TOPIC #3

Speaking of it being the year 2014, I have a great premonition that this is the year. The year where K-pop makes its revival and restoration.

This is that year.

2011 to 2013 seemed to be the fallout years for K-pop. So many new groups came out at once, it was like a tactical nuke in the form of attractive-yet-eerily-similar-looking-pubescent-boys-and-girls took over the world. Now don’t get me wrong! Some groups actually came out of the rubble to flourish into something greater and better, and that’s fabulous, but I think I started to give up hope on K-pop  in this three year span because I felt like all the companies — major conglomerates and smaller rundowns alike — were trying so hard to create the next big thing that all they managed to build was a forced and desperate attack.

But pan-zoom to the year 2014.

Rookie groups are so in right now, and fans are taking them seriously. There is so much unlocked potential in the rookie groups that have debuted in the last seven months. I swear…it’s like everyone came together, had a meeting, and agreed to debut the best of the best that they had all at the same time (and that time is now). So yes, there are major flops every now and then, but K-poppers are taking rookie groups to a whole new level. Our love for the classics will continue to stay, but we’re hunting for fresh meat, and LU:KAS, AlphaBAT, SPEED, C-CLOWN, LC9, TINY-G, GP BASIC, etc. etc. etc. are just waiting to be swallowed up whole.

I think we should all go out and buy large rafts, because the Hallyu Wave is seriously about to make some huge tides.

TOPIC #4

Tying in with the previous two topics is this one: the growth of the “veteran idol”. What does that mean, you ask? It means this: back in 2008, SHINHWA, g.o.d, 1TYM, Se7en, SNSD, SS501, DBSK, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, KARA, and Super Junior (I’m missing a lot but you get the drift) were the “in” groups, but now they’ve earned their medals and have taken a huge leap over the finish line, and are slowly making their way towards bigger and better endeavors. It’s heartbreaking to admit that a few members have left, some groups have divided, and others are broken up, but the forever-feeling of having loved these groups remain. The only thing that has changed in the relationship between the veteran idol and the fan is the simple fact that the veteran idol is making history in ways we never thought possible before. And fans are eager.

In the same way we are anticipating the amazing-ness of new groups like Got7, EXO, BTS, 100% and what not, we are even more so anticipating the epic-ness of what older groups are bringing to the table.

Boundaries are disappearing and walls are falling down – new collaborations are underway, sub-units are making progress, songs are testing vocal limits like crazy, dances are vigorously intense, live performances are off the chain, variety show appearances are gold, and the list goes on and on.

K-pop is moving from just having been an addiction to a musical style with tasteful attributes.

SO. That’s that. Lengthy in all of its essence, I know. But I had to get this out there. I tried to make it all sound as logical and non-biased as possible, but I am human and I do err. Hopefully you stuck through it until the end, and hopefully you have some insight to add onto mine. It’d be cool to have some in-depth conversations about this.

Alrightey, I’m done with this for now. I enjoyed writing something a little different from the norm. If you guys don’t mind it, I can continue to do things like this more often.

Anyways, leave a comment below if you feel the need to! I got to get back to working on profiles.

[UPDATE] EXO-M, GLAM, New Profiles, Updated “Fan Club Names & Colors” Page + More!!

Hi everyone! Here’s what went down today on the blog:

1) We realized that since EXO-M‘s Kris hasn’t necessarily left the group yet, but neither is he in it, we figured to just leave the label of being a “former member” out. Technically, to us, he’s still a part of this group…and until the words come out of his mouth himself and we all hear it, we won’t change that label quite yet. Thanks to those of you who alerted us of the issue.

2) GLAM‘s Trinity left the group back in December of 2012, so we made sure to list her as a “former member” on the profile. Now this is one member we’re sure can be labeled as former.

3) Now THIS is the part of the update we’re glad to announce: we have two new profiles!! And they are profiles for Busker Busker and Royal Pirates! These are two groups that we wanted to make sure we had on the site, because not only are they all incredibly talented in their own respective genre, but they’re definitely different from what people think the typical conceptual idea of a K-Pop group is. Make sure to check those profiles out and let us know if something needs to be adjusted!

Royal Pirates Profile: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/kpop-profiles/boy-groups/royal-pirates-profile/

4) To coincide along with the new profiles, we added some of their official accounts to the Official Celebrity Accounts page, including their Twitters, Facebook, WordPress (Yes, Wordpres…James of Royal Pirates has a WordPress. OMG so cool)… etc. Click on over to this page if you’re interested in following them!

5) All of you have been asking, and so we got this done real quick (it’s not like it was difficult to manage anyways). VIXX’s fan club has been added to the “Fan Club Names and Colors” page. To all ya Starlights out there, you’re welcome.

6) Our “Agencies and Record Labels” page has also been updated, since a couple of artists have made the switch in recent years (i.e. Rain, Epik High, etc.) If you care to give this page a glance over, then go ahead!

7) Okay, this update is totally besides the point, but I just wanted to mention this one thing: I TOTALLY HAVE FALLEN SO HARD SO FAST FOR GOT7. I MEAN, COME ON, ALL YOU OTHER GOT7 FANS OUT THERE…AREN’T YOU ALSO HAVING A MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR PROBLEM CHOOSING AN ULTIMATE BIAS FROM THAT GROUP? IT’S ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE, RIGHT? RIGHT?! RIGHT. Well, anyways…yes, I’ll unashamedly admit the fact that at first, it started with making their profile, then I started looking up their photos and gifs on Google, followed by watching their live performances, trailed by watching Real Got7, led on by watching their variety program, and then afterwards downloading all their songs. Now I’m here. End of story. I just couldn’t help but fall for Jr.’s charms, JB’s eye smile, Jackson’s witty wackiness, Mark’s gorgeous grin/face/skin, BamBam’s adorableness, Youngjae’s innocence, and Yugyeom’s sensitivity. I can’t…even…AND THEY CALL JACKSON MANDU. IT’S ONLY NATURAL THAT WE START MAKING JACKSON THE FACE OF THIS WEBSITE.

Alright all you Mandu-ers out there. That’s all for today. Check back this Friday for our new Faceoff Friday post! We have a good one for you! We planned it to semi-coincide with the 4th of July, since that day in America is our Independence Day.

Also, the next two profiles we plan to work on will be Akdong Musician and Eric Nam.

Okie dokies everyone, we love you all! Don’t forget to share the K-Pop love! ❤

[UPDATE] New BTS Profile + BTS’ Official Accounts + Updated “Celebrity Birthdays” Page + Updated “Debuts” Page!!

Hi everyone! Did you miss me?

Okay, so here’s what went down today on the blog:

1) New BTS profile posted! This was a highly requested profile (right up there next to Got7), so I just had to get it done pronto. Check it out! I made sure to put lots of good, yummy details in. Btw, is it me or isn’t the meaning of their group name just a little funny? But I think it fits them perfectly. It sounds so…warrior-like…and that’s how they’re depicted as – strong, grimy, tough and rough men. Well, at least in their song “N.O” they are.

2) So it’s only natural that if I post up a new profile, I’ve got to simultaneously update the “Official Celebrity Accounts” page. Which is what I did. So go here if you wanna find the links to Bangtan Boys’ YouTube, Twitter, etc….etc….etc…ya know the deal. And in all actuality, you probably already googled all this stuff up ages ago because we’re so behind on this stuff T^T huhuhu I’m sorry I’m only human. I make mistakes too.

3) I managed to (thankfully) update the extremely, extremely, extremely long list on our “Celebrity Birthdays” page. For those of you that are wondering Wait. Isn’t that just the same thing as what’s on a member profile? then the answer is “NO”. This page organizes an extensive list of celebrities’ birthdays – including some actors and models – by month and day (so you can see which idols share the same birthday as you).

But back to more important things. I added Busker Busker’s members’ birthdays to the list, as well as BTS’ members’, and SPEED’s, and EXO-K’s as well as EXO-M’s. Give it a go and visit the page!

4) Likewise, I happened to update the “Debuts” page too while I was at it. I inserted EXO-M’s debut, EXO-K’s, GOT7’s, and BTS’, among many, many others (i.e. groups who debuted from the year 2012 up until June of 2014).

Debuts: https://sumandu.wordpress.com/more-k-pop-information/debuts-2011/

And that’s that! If you guys aren’t already following us on Instagram or Twitter, then go do so NOW. I keep y’all posted on those sites faster than on here, because I only post on here once I’m done with everything…but on IG and Twitter, I can keep you posted LIVE (AKA as I’m working). Help us reach at least 100 followers! It looks sad that we haven’t even hit the twenty mark yet.

Anyways, hope you all have a nice rest of your day/evening/morning….and if you haven’t watched the latest episode of Running Man, then you’re missing out. It was fantabulous. I loved Jiyoung and Sunggyu especially. They rocked the variety world that episode.

ALSO…as always, let us know if something is wrong and needs to be corrected. We always look at your comments! They’re very helpful sometimes!

Okie dokies, I’m signing off here for the day. Talk to you all tomorrow!
